Working with birthing women and their partners has shown itself as my calling quite a number of years ago.
My journey into the very special field of childbirth began in Germany, where I grew up and graduated from nursing school in 1988. In 1990 I obtained my license as Registered Nurse in the US. Finally, in 1995 I graduated from a midwifery college in England. The latter has enabled me to become well-grounded in needed theoretical knowledge as well as practical experience with pregnancy, labor, birth, postnatal care, and the needs of a newborn. More importantly, my midwifery training has helped me to appreciate the vulnerability and need for support of women during childbirth. Of course, birth does not always go as planned, but even then a woman and her partner can experience the events in positive ways.
I have given birth to two children myself, during whose birthing I experienced everything from natural, unmedicated progress to the intervention of instrumental delivery. Being a childbirth professional was laid aside for me as I have focused solely on raising my children for the last ten years. My husband and I just celebrated our twentieth wedding anniversary.
As my children are older now, I immediately responded when I had the recent opportunity to train as a labor doula with DONA ( Doulas of North America ). I am also enrolled in the "Ancient Art Midwifery Institute " to bring current research-based knowledge to my doula practice.
As a doula, I believe in a woman's natural ability to cope with the wonder of birth. I can assist in this process by drawing from my experience with childbirth in a variety of cultures and settings. My desire is to contribute to a positive birth experience for my clients. Rather than replacing the woman's partner, I can help him to become practically involved as much as he desires. My services as doula include emotional and informational support, as well as a variety of comfort measures for labor.
My loyalty lies with the laboring woman and her partner and I am available for continous support for the duration of labor and the immediate postnatal period.
I look forward to serving you.
