Birth Doula Profile - Ligea Gallotti

Ligea Gallotti

Being a Doula was not something I choose it happened to me first by having been brought up in a household where my father practiced as an OBGYN for 35 years. He worked with several doulas out of the hospital as it is common practice in Italy to do so.

In 2002 I was hired as a patient for the PACE/Labor Study and found out for the first time that in the USA future moms have to hire a Doula on their own because most places where they can give birth don’t offer the service. I could not have imagined coming from a culture that promoted Doula care my own birth without a Doula. At the same time I was working already in the health care system as a Medical Interpreter and while taking a Portuguese Medical Interpreting class I met a Doula whom put me on the right path. Shortly after I was trained through the in house programs at Boston Medical Center and Cambridge Hospital, where I am still active as a multilingual multicultural Doula; I also work for Mount Auburn Hospital whom offers 6 births per month with a Doula to their Spanish speaking population. I met Tara and several other great doulas while working (after having been part of the study) for the PACE/Labor Study out of MGH and the Brigham’s. I have witnessed the beauty of birth more than 100 times in few years and every time I get so excited about the entire process it just seems like it is my first birth over and over again. I teach once a year two Doula classes at BMC for their Doula program and specialize in “When things go wrong”.

I am a CAPPA and Lamaze trained Child Birth Educator, and a DONA trained Post Partum Doula.
