I was trained by Childbirth Education Association as a "labor coach" in 1971. I worked for them and for the Sophia Little Home in Rhode Island as a labor coach, attending births with young women who found themselves pregnant and alone. I did this for many years, on and off, as I busily had my own children. I have had six children, and I had them all through the tenets of Natural Childbirth. I have developed a profound respect for the strength of a woman's body, and the soundness of her spirit.
Several years ago, someone said, "Oh, you're a doula." I said, "What's a doula?" I have since learned the origin of that term, and made the acquaintance of many like-minded women who give of themselves to women in labor, women who need the support of caring, nurturing, loving gentle women who embody what it means to be a doula.
I was retrained and have since received DONA certification (Doulas of North America). I spent four years in the PACE and LABOR Studies at two major hospitals in Boston. What a privilege that was, not only to be part of a fabulous group of doulas who exemplify the profession of doula, but also to be invited into the labor rooms of many women, and witness firsthand the power of birth and the beauty of woman's finest accomplishments.
I have a knowledge of Lamaze, aroma therapy, massage and pressure points, hypnobirthing, and Mindful Childbirth. I use a combination of all of them as I seek to bring comfort to women in labor. But mostly I share what I know with the laboring mom, and then step back and watch miracles happen.
I have the best job in the world.
